“Without dreams, there can be no courage and without courage, there can be no action.” Rightly said by Wim Wender, the famous German film maker and author. There would be hardly any person born on the planet who does not have any dream. Dreams can be of any type whether to own a Mercedes, or to work in Switzerland. There is no restriction in having dreams but one must undertake some actions to achieve his/her dreams. Like everybody else I also have a dream to work as a chief marketing officer in Tata group of companies. In the reforming world of marketing, where strategies evolve each passing day and the behaviour of the customers changes very quickly, one dream has always been there within me and that is to work as CMO.
I have always admired or I can say my role model, Mr. Ratan tata sir I have always tried to follow the values which he had given to the world and also tried to follow his path. From the very first day when the meaning of the word “role model” was explained to me, Mr. ratan tata had been my role model and my dream of working as a CMO in tata group of companies in some ways or other has generated from there only and also what triggered me the most is that Marketing many times revolves around the customers psychology and I am always interested in understanding human minds. Also One of my favourite quote is “The mind is its own place, and in itself, can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven”. I knew then this is the path I wanted to walk on.
Chief marketing officer needs to be very good in certain skill set and one the skills which is majorly required is public speaking. Public speaking plays a very crucial role in marketing world. public speaking is required for internal communication, it is required for external communication without communication nothing can be achieved also as a leader you must be able to influence other and if I am not good in influencing people then in that case I am not fit for that job.
In this typical world everything has a reason and why I am lacking in public speaking is because I am little bit introvert and also in some corner of my mind I have a fear of judgement. What I think is there are only these two reasons why I am lacking in public speaking.
If I do not overcome the fear of public speaking then I would not be fit for the aspiring job I am looking for. Also public speaking is required in each and every aspect of marketing.
In order to overcome my fear of public speaking I used chat GPT and I was very surprised as there were a lot of ways given by chat GPT to overcome the fear of public speaking. The very first was of practice more and more, simple but holds a great value. Practice gives us a lot of confidence and also improves our skill. Another was of visualization and positive affirmation, use positive words for ourself to boost our confidence level. I can also take help from professionals in order to improve my public speaking skills, I can also enroll in public speaking workshops, a very good way to develop the skill in which I am lacking behind. The another way to improve which I came to know about was of a book titled as “Talk like TED” by Carmine Gallo which talks about the 9 public speaking secrets of the world’s top minds. When I started reading that book it was really a great help and the 9 secrets which the book have talked about is really fantastic.
The book is enormous and the summary is not short which I can explain here but I can not resist my self from sharing the 9 principles which Gallo has talked about.
So the first principle he talked about was of unleashing the master within that is passion. Unleash your passion.
The second principle he stated was of storytelling that is master the art of storytelling.
The third one is of having a conversation. A very significant one. Building a conversation is not an easy task.
Now comes the 4th principle of Gallo in which he said “Teach me something new”. It states that if the audience is able to learn something new from your content then in that case you are succeeded.
The another principle he stated was of “Delivering jaw dropping moments”.
“Lighten up” was the 6th principle given by him. That means including sense of humor which is not common nowadays.
Stick to the 18 minute rule was the 7th principle of his book “Talk like TED” it means that an ideal presentation should not be more than of 18 minutes.
The another was Paint a mental picture with a Multisensory experiences.
The last principle i.e. the 9th principle was of Stay in your lane that means the Authenticity.
All the 9 principles mentioned above if followed by a person there is no power on the earth which can stop him from becoming a good public speaker.
In the pursuit of our dreams, we often find ourself facing challenges and my dream of working as a CMO is no exception. Through out this blog I have tried to explore the role of a CMO, skills required, and my personal hurdle of public speaking which is standing in the way of my ambition. CMO is not just about the title but also about making the impact on the organization.
As I strive to conquer the fear of public speaking. I must keep in my mind that its not just the skill required for CMO , it’s the skill which can enhance my leadership skills also.
So I would be concluding by saying that with Hardwork, dedication, practice and a groth mindset we can transform the fear into a valuable asset
